Dubai: Travellers planning to visit India should note new hand baggage regulations implemented by the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) and the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF).
These regulations introduce stricter size and weight restrictions for carry-on luggage to enhance security and improve airport efficiency. These changes are leading major airlines to update their baggage policies.
Key changes in the hand baggage policy
One bag rule:
Passengers, whether on domestic or international flights, may carry only one cabin bag on board. Any additional luggage must be checked in.
Weight and size restrictions:
Economy & Premium Economy: One bag, up to 7 kg.
Business & First Class: One bag, up to 10 kg.
Dimensions for all classes:
Height: 55 cm (21.6 inches)
Length: 40 cm (15.7 inches)
Width: 20 cm (7.8 inches)
Exemptions for older bookings:
Passengers with tickets purchased before May 4, 2024, are allowed higher weight limits:
Economy: Up to 8 kg
Premium Economy: Up to 10 kg
Business & First Class: Up to 12 kg
This exemption applies only to unchanged bookings made before the specified date.
Airline-specific policies:
Air India: Complies with the one-bag limit, allowing a 7 kg bag for economy passengers and 10 kg for business class.
IndiGo Airlines: Permits one cabin bag (max 7 kg and 115 cm in combined dimensions) and a small personal item like a purse or laptop bag, up to 3 kg.

Airlines like IndiGo and Air India have updated their luggage policies to align with the new regulations.
Why the stricter rules?
The surge in air travel, particularly in India, has led to increased congestion at airports and delays at security checkpoints. By limiting cabin baggage, authorities aim to:
Expedite the boarding process
Reduce security delays
Ensure a more organised cabin environment for passengers and crew
These updated policies, enforced by BCAS and CISF, represent a significant step toward improving airport efficiency and enhancing the passenger experience. Passengers are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the new guidelines to avoid inconvenience and ensure compliance.
